It is so nice to finally know!
”For four years we struggled to overcome our youngest daughter Lisa’s stomach problems. We tested everything! And it wasn't simply a matter of rearranging the diet at home every time, we also had to get school and day care staff on board. The first time a lot of lactose – next time none. The second time a lot of eggs – next time none, and so on. The first few times we were hopeful and persistent, but that got harder and harder after each fruitless attempt.
The stomach problems started when Lisa was four years old, with short periods of stomach ache and diarrhoea. But it seemed vague and she had a hard time pointing out where it hurt. At first we thought she was worried and stressed at preschool, but the staff perceived her as calm and harmonious. When she got older she could better describe where it hurt and when she was in first grade we visited a doctor for the first time.
But it took several more years of uncertainty before it became clear. A colleague had gone through similar problems and told about a test that could be done at home to see whether this was lactose intolerance. Even though the test showed that this was the case, I felt enormous relief at finding out. Once we knew what was causing Lisa’s problem, we could simply adapt her diet and now Lisa is doing fine.”
